How much wealthy are the founders of MapReduce? Who truly hit pay dirt thanks to their data science craftmanship?
Names that come to my mind are the founders of Google (Larry Page, Sergey Brin) and David Elliot Shaw, the founder of one of the most successful Wall Street firms. Maybe also Donald Ervin Knuth, our data science ancestor who jump-stated computer science in Palo Alto 40 years ago.
These people made tons of money, exploiting big data via data science techniques. Who else would you add to this list?

Hi Vincent: It's an interesting topic but David Shaw is not a good example of a data scientist. I'm sure the guy's a genius but he was doing stat arb in the early-mid 80's at Morgan Stanley and then D.E Shaw came soon after that. The concept of big data or data scientist wasn't a concept back then. Definitely you could call him a data analysis whiz though.

If I was limited to one fellow that hit paydirt on "big data", I would have to say Jeff Bezos of Amazon is the guy. Can anyone think of big data without thinking about Hadoop, Cassandra, and the rest? Net worth estimated at $23.2 B, I believe...

Permalink Reply by Bill Rus on December 5, 2012 at 7:10pm Good one, Jim. Linking two comments, we must note that Jeff Bezos worked for D.E Shaw prior to starting Amazon.
A name that easily comes to mind is Elwyn Berlekamp, one of my professors at Berkeley, who started Axcom, which is now known as Medallion Fund. Not sure of net worth, but if net worth includes the admiration of his students, he's a star. He finds elegant and practical solutions to interesting and complex problems.

Thanks! I have a very good friend who works at Amazon and she has high praise for Bezos. And a double thank you for giving me someone to research - I will see if I can find anything that Dr. Berlekamp has published. New ideas and outlooks are always s treat.
