New Stock Trading and Lottery Game Rooted in Deep Math

I describe here the ultimate number guessing game, played with real money. It is a new trading and gaming system, based on state-of-the-art mathematical engineering, robust architecture, and patent-pending technology. It offers an alternative to the stock market and traditional gaming. This system is also far more transparent than the stock market, and can not be manipulated, as formulas to win the biggest returns (with real money) are made public. Also, it simulates a neutral,…

Recommender Systems - past, present, and future

This article has been recovered from our archives. Author: Kirk Borne. Published in February 2014.

Recommender systems are among the most fun and profitable applications of data science in the big data world. Training data (corresponding to the historical search, browse, purchase, and customer feedback patterns of your customers) can be converted into golden opportunities for ROI (i.e., …

Most Popular Content on DSC

We have been in existence for over 10 years now, with content in many different places, lists, categories, and databases. This is an attempt to put everything together in one place, and help our readers (re-)discover some great articles and resources that were lost on the Internet over the years, but still sit on our web servers. We are making them come back to life. We are in the process of organizing it in a way that is user-friendly.  Some of the resources below are very recent, and some…

Azure Data Studio in One Picture

I was invited at the recent Microsoft’s Azure Data and AI Tech Immersion event (March 2019) and we played a bit with various tools, including Azure Data Studio and Azure Databricks. The picture below summarizes my understanding of this platform, based on my short experience with it.

Making New Drugs with a Dose of Artificial Intelligence

There is a meeting of the world’s most renowned scientists once in two years. These meetings are held to tackle biological puzzles they call the protein folding problem where they try to predict the shape of the proteins in the human body. Nobody knows how the problem can be solved. Such meetings are how these scientists come up with a great way to solve issues in the human body by creating new medicine that will fight…

Long-range Correlations in Time Series: Modeling, Testing, Case Study

We investigate a large class of auto-correlated, stationary time series, proposing a new statistical test to measure departure from the base model, known as Brownian motion. We also discuss a methodology to deconstruct these time series, in order to identify the root mechanism that generates the observations. The time series studied here can be discrete or continuous in time, they  can have various degrees of smoothness (typically measured using the Hurst exponent) as well as long-range or…
