Visual Analytics- Why & How- A light introduction

Think of all the self-service things you use in a day. Petrol stations, ATMs, Online/Apps for stock trading, banking, and shopping. The idea behind all this:

  • Convenience to customers
  • Reduced costs for providers
  • Freedom of choice about what I want, when I want without involvement of others in my minute-to-minute decisions.

We love to see and track health stats on Fitbit, Apple Watch, and Garmin.

The same goes with self service interactive…

Inside the black box 2

Following the original observations of Neural Networks in action; I decided a follow up was needed.  In the original blog, ; the smallest neural net (NN) that learnt the data set was 2-6-3-1 but the details were not saved, a second NN with the same configuration came close but its approach was different. The…

Inside the black box

Introduction

This post is designed show the internal changes of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN/NN), it shows the outputs of the neurons from the beginning of a Backpropagation algorithm to convergence.

The hope is for a better understanding of why we use a second hidden layer, local minimums, to how many internal nodes are required and their impact on the final solution.

The Dataset…

Create Twitter WordCloud with just 40 lines of RCode

Guess whose twitter handle gives this word cloud? Enough hints present in there. You are right, that is Andrew Ng tweeting about his new Deep Learning course on Coursera! It’s always fun to see data in action; isn’t it? Let’s try and create a similar wordcloud for three world leaders, viz. American President Donald Trump, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Russian President Vladimir Putin.…

Venn style data visualisation

Just wondering if anyone knows of free (or affordable) software that can be used for accurate and proportionate representation of data in Venn style formats. When I was writing my dissertation, I couldn't locate anything in the time that I had, so I used "hand crafted" infographics made in Excel using Esri Public 1.  …

Data: It’s not the length; it’s the width that matters!

It’s time to forget the ‘vertical’ perception of Big Data, i.e. vast volumes and ROWSof data, and start to think about the ‘horizontal’ reality and true power of data. TheCOLUMNS of rich, informative data is where your real value lies and where truly smart decisions will be made.

Granted, extensive columns of data will get unmanageable to work with. But this is where data analytics can help…
