Best Subset Regression method can be used to create a best-fitting regression model. This technique of model building helps to identify which predictor (independent) variables should be included in a multiple regression model(MLR).
This method comprises of scrutinizing all of the models created from all possible permutation combination of predictor variables. This technique uses the R Squared value to check for the best model. Considering the level of complexity involved in creating…

Length of Stay (LOS) is a critical factor in managing hospital quality & economic outcomes in Healthcare. The metric is calculated by summing the total number of days for all discharges & dividing it by the total number of discharges. Insurance programs such as Medicare are moving to a model where they are compensating Hospitals the same amount for a specific surgery (e.g. Joint replacement) regardless of the number of days spent in the hospital. Therefore, hospitals & the…

I had some magical moments in my life. Perhaps the most magical was the summer I went to work wearing shorts and running shoes. Captain C. said to me, as I sat in our shared office, “If you want to work during the weekend, you can borrow the keys to the building.” It didn’t seem like a big deal at the time. I had already borrowed a military vehicle that, as per Captain C., I could park anywhere in Canada without receiving a parking ticket. So I borrowed the keys to the building. I went…

The wealth management industry is facing a wave of digital disruption. Developments in finance, science and technology have led to a new generation of financial technology start-ups. Most “fin-techs” focus on automated investment services, or so-called ‘robo-advisers’.
Betterment, the pioneer of automated investing, recently surpassed $5 billion in assets under management, only 8 years after it was founded. What makes…

Anyone who has followed that last few presidential elections has seen how easily data can go from a hero to a zero. Nate Silver was a genius when his model and analysis successfully predicted Obama's electoral wins with great precision in 2008 and 2012. However, after the 2016 election, Mr. Silver and the value of data fell precipitously from grace in the eyes of political pundits and many voters.
Those of us who know better, well... know better. The problem wasn't with the data or…

Christmas is an odd but challenging of time of the year, especially for the nerdiest of us. The number of problems to solve are never ending. There isn’t enough computational power, even with using multiple Apache Sparks to draw the correct solution. Here are some notes that I have on those challenges.

Training modern deepnets can take an inordinate amount of time even with the best GPU hardware available. Inception-3 on ImageNet 1000 using 8 NVIDIA Tesla K40s takes about 2 weeks (Google Research Blog).
Even when a large network is trained successfully, the memory footprint and the prediction latency (due to the number of its parameters) can make it challenging to put it into production.
One way to keep…
