Social media and internet search scare me because it is so easy to acquire information without also acquiring the associated knowledge. It’s easy to find almost any information via search or social media, but an effective “student of data scientist” (as well as any effective future leader) must learn to discern easily acquired information with a sense of skepticism. To quote the character Dr. Ian Malcolm (played skillfully by Jeffrey Goldblum) in the movie “Jurassic Park:”…Continue

Ethics in machine learning are what comes to mind when we imagine a worst case scenario in the context of artificial intelligence. As an example, we can think of HAL 9000 from ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ and Skynet from the ‘Terminator’ films or more recently Ultron from the ‘Avengers’. Sadly, the main thinking behind most of the depicted self aware artificial…Continue

When talking to clients about their business goals, most business executives are pretty clear as to what they want to accomplish, such as reducing customer churn or reducing inventory costs or improving quality of care or improving product line profitability. But these “one dimensional” business initiatives really don’t push the organization’s innovative thinking. For example, I can easily reduce marketing costs if I significantly reduce advertising and…Continue

Alex Krizhevsky, Geoffrey Hinton and Ilya Sutskever created a neural network architecture called ‘AlexNet’ and won Image Classification Challenge (ILSVRC) in 2012. They trained their network on 1.2 million high-resolution images into 1000…Continue

Matching and merging 2 files is task I find myself doing all of the time. Historically, I've used VLOOKUP in MS Excel and just worked around any limitations. Finally, I bit the bullet and wrote an R Function that does the trick faster, and with more flexibility.

If you are a senior data scientist or pro in predictive analytics, you would probably be using both R & Python, and maybe other tools like SAS, SQL etc. But, what if you are a beginner or just thinking about to start a career in data science, machine learning, and business analytics ? Which one should you learn – R or Python? It has…Continue
Depending on what news headline you have read, you may have perceived an Artificial Intelligence (AI) system as either an Alexa or Siri assistant that understands all your commands, a deep learning system that can recognize dog or a cat from image, a system that recommends personalized medicine, or an intelligent, overpowering machine that can overtake all human tasks and render humans useless. Few of these definitions can be termed as …Continue

Organizations, often in their me-too hurry to adopt a new technology, just pour their old-wine (data) into a new bottle. What was originally called ‘sales-information-system’ in the good-old-days underwent many avatars before it became BI (business intelligence) and then off-late, it is time to switch again. The latest avatar is called Data-Visualization-Tool, and every CIO…Continue

Data science development is very different from software development, and getting the two to mesh is sometimes like trying to cobble together Tinker Toys with Lincoln Logs. One data science expert once described the differences as:
Software development is “Measure twice; cut once,” while Data Science is “Cut, cut, cut!”
The methodologies and processes that support successful software development do not work for data science projects according to one…Continue

Yann LeCun, Leon Bottou, Yosuha Bengio and Patrick Haffner proposed a neural network architecture for handwritten and machine-printed character recognition in 1990’s which they called LeNet-5. The architecture is straightforward and simple to understand that’s why it is mostly used as a first step for teaching Convolutional Neural…Continue

Summary: Advanced analytics and AI are the fourth great lever available to create organic improvement in corporations. We’ll describe why this one is different from the first three and why the CEO needs the direct help of data scientists to make this happen.
If you’re a CEO or any other flavor of top executive leading a…Continue
In this post, we explore some broad guidelines for selecting machine learning models
The overall steps for Machine Learning/Deep Learning are:
Convolutional neural network – In this article, we will explore our intuitive explanation of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) on high level. CNN are inspired by the structure of the brain but our focus will not be on neural science in here as we do not specialise in any biological aspect. We are going artificial in this post.
Convolutional Neural Networks are a special kind of multi-layer neural networks.

Something I learned during my graduate studies is that jails – like the old Don Jail as it once existed in Toronto (photographed by me above) – has special significance among those that study the history of people with disabilities. For one thing, there are many people with disabilities in jail – sometimes placed there because…Continue

Given the touting of recent analytic and machine learning results in healthcare, why haven't doctors been replaced by computers yet? The truth is that there are many obstacles that stand in the way of implementing analytics in healthcare. Ethical issues introduced by this technology are also fiercely debated and must be considered. Finally, while obstacles imply a possibility of being overcome, there are also limitations to this technology,…Continue
