In recent years, many companies realized how much competitive advantage big data analytics can bring to their business model. This has drastically increased the demand for big data professionals. Since top talents in this field are already hard to find, companies often need to outsource big data analytics in order to bridge over labor market’s skill gap.
I keep hearing Data Scientists say that ‘Statistics is Dead’, and they even have big debates about it attended by the good and great of Data Science. Interestingly, there seem to be very few actual statisticians at these debates.
So why do Data Scientists think that stats is dead? Where does the notion that there is no longer any need for statistical analysis come from? And are they right?
Is statistics dead or is it just pining for…Continue

You can turn right on red in Iowa. Except not where I was last night, from Washington Street on to Linn, which I only realized as I read the “no right on red” sign mid-turn. You’re definitely not supposed to turn left on red, which is what I did a few blocks earlier going from Iowa St. to Clinton. I have no excuse except—I’m not kidding—my mind was preoccupied by thoughts about self-driving…Continue

As more public datasets are opened up, finding effective ways to communicate the messages within them becomes increasingly important. There is no shortage of data available to us, but it can be difficult to extract meaning from it in its raw state. That’s where data visualisation comes in. Effective data vis can…Continue

1. Introduction to Microcontroller:
A microprocessor system consists of a microprocessor with memory, input ports and output ports connected to it externally. A microcontroller is a single chip containing a microprocessor, memory, input ports and output ports. Since all four blocks reside on the one chip, a microcontroller is much faster than a microprocessor system.

“The only function of economic forecasting is to make astrology look respectable” John Kenneth Galbraith
Predictive modeling and traditional ratemaking is an exercise of forecasting the future, whether directly or indirectly (indirectly as generalizing historical lessons to the future). But is such forecasting so hopeless as being same as seeing into a crystal ball?
The advantage of data scientist and actuaries is their close in contact with…Continue

Shakespeare and Fuzzy Logic
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy. - Hamlet (1.5.167-8), Hamlet to Horatio
Shakespeare teaches us in this Hamlet quote that reality is much more complex than our mental projections and understanding. Reality is fuzzier than we would care to think. Although introducing subjectivities to modeling seems to harm the…Continue
We should attempt to creatively synthesize the many pluralistic approaches as well as focus more on synergistic interpretation of findings of these pluralistic researches.
We can recognize that though we cannot precisely predict black swans but forecasting emerging liabilities and their ratemaking can be a professional-character building experience in itself where we train to be better evolvers rather than better predictors alone.
