Data without Emotion Doesn't Bring about Change

"There is no evidence that anybody has been converted by a pie chart."



So said Martin Palmer, secretary general of the Alliance of Religions and Conservation, on BBC’s Beyond Belief.



He went on to say, "People are converted by stories, by narrative, by emotion, by an appeal to the heart."

Fit the Chart to the Story, Not the Data

"Hey, Andy, check out this data I have. What's the best chart to show it?"

I get asked this question a lot. My answer is always the same: It depends. This is partly because it depends on the audience, the purpose, and the type of data you have. What is most important is that your choice of chart is determined by the story within the data just as much as it is by anything else. Just because you have geographical data, it doesn't mean you should make a map.

Why I Ditched My Fitbit and What This Means for Analytics

When I first got a Fitbit, it was amazing.

My daily dashboard, focusing mostly on a 10,000-step target, was incredibly motivating. Was I hitting the target? Answer: sometimes. Connecting with friends added great gamification.
