Web designers avoid data because most of them are not comfortable dealing with it. But, as we are progressing ahead towards a more digital age, designers have the responsibility to produce highly effective data driven designs. 

Invariably, data science is playing—and will continue to play—a large role in web design. The designers need to educate themselves about the rapidly growing trend of data-driven design and adapt to the challenges it is bringing to our role as web designers. 

Who is a Data Scientist?

As per Udacity, a data scientist is a person who has the responsibility to glean insight from the massive pool of data. The work requires more sophisticated skills to tackle a higher volume and velocity of data. As such, a data scientist is someone who can do undirected research and tackle open-ended problems and questions. Data scientists typically have advanced degrees in a quantitative field, like computer science, physics, statistics, or applied mathematics, and they have the knowledge to invent new algorithms to solve data problems.

We Have Access to Simple and Easy to use Tools

When it comes to web design, we are already having access to a variety of tools. Website builders like MotoCMS or design sharing platform like Avocode are simple and easy to use. Moreover, data visualization tools like Tableau, Raw, Dygraphs, ZIngchart, Instant Atlas, Timeline, Exhibit, Modest Maps and Leaflet are gems in the making. Statistical tools focus on ad hoc analysis and allow data scientists to do powerful things like run regressions and visualize data in a more easily digestible format. Anstocal tools like CrazyEgg, Optimizely, Clicktale, and Google Analytics, designers can get real data that helps marry of design and analytics for optimal client results.

Producing Data Driven Designs - How Big Data is Improving Web Design?

It is what you do with the data that will determine whether you get as many visitors to your site as you can or not. Data driven models are carefully thought of and this refers to both the presentation and the arrangement of your data in a way that is useful to your clients, and this will be determined by your web design – something the techies call data-driven design.

There are a lot of advantages in letting your data determine the web design; from improving iterative design to getting prompt information on how people interact with the design and the information. Using data that you can refer for future work opens the possibility of automating the web development. 

In the healthcare industry, big data is in the form of medical history, employment and residential information among others, is used to improve patient care as well as determine the best possible course of treatment. So it is the same concept only referring to web design.

Every customer comes to you for help solving a problem. In order to achieve more sales and leads, it is important to track the behavior of the audience and produce designs that impacts that behavior. Looking at the purchase process helps. What page(s) are causing people dropping off the sales cycle? What colors are you using for your calls to action (CTA)? Have you A/B tested any of your CTA’s? The best color may not actually be green, you know. A Data driven designs helps you to find answers to these problems and produce designs that improves the bottomline.
