Protecting Data with Data: Predicting Cyber Threats Before they Happen

Businesses have always faced security threats, whether is someone breaking in to steal some cash or equipment, a disgruntled employee selling company secrets, or something else altogether, there has always been cause to be careful as a business owner.

However, with the evolution of technology, and the digital age coming into full swing, security threats have evolved as well, and cyber security is more important than ever before. In fact, the single biggest threat that any company — or indeed anyone with a computer or mobile device — faces today is the possibility of a cyber attack.

But how do you protect your company from such an attack? What sets apart certain companies, and prevents them from suffering the same cyber fate as those who are less fortunate? A lot of the time it is little more than basic knowledge. Knowing about the potential danger and acting pre-emptively is the best way to protect your company’s information before it is stolen. Here are some of the main things that you need to do to protect your company’s data.

Educate

As mentioned, the main thing that will help you in the fight against cyber crime is education. This not only means making yourself aware of the dangers that face your company, but extending that knowledge to your employees and everyone at the company.

A lot of cyber crime is down to nothing more than human error. All it takes is for one computer to be compromised or for one unwanted person to enter your cloud self service portal, and the whole system will be at risk. Weak passwords, careless online activity, or hacked personal email addresses are all ways in which hackers will try to gain access to your system. And they are also all things that can be prevented through proper, basic training.

Secure Your Network

It is cyber security 101, but many companies don’t realize the importance of a secure network when it comes to protecting your data. Having an unsecured wifi network is the equivalent to leaving your front door open — you are just asking people to walk right inside.

The best practice when it comes to a network is to have a wired, rather than a wireless network. This would mean that a hacker would have to physically plug into your network in order to hack it. If your business requires a wifi network however, make sure that it is not only secure, but that you change the information regularly, giving only your employees or patrons the new password when it changes.

Protect your Premises

If you want to protect your data, it is worth noting that physical protection of your hardware should be a priority as well. One of the most common ways that hackers will get into a system is through first stealing important electronic equipment such as servers, laptops, phones, and so on. When they have access to your hardware, it will be significantly easier for them to gain access to your important information, or that of your clients. You might not have to go as far as hiring a security guard, but you might consider double checking the security of your building, and revisiting your policies concerning employees taking devices home.

Get the Proper Cyber Security

When you want to protect your physical business, you hire a security guard. When most of your information is digital, the same concept applies. Good cyber security is the best way to make sure that you are protecting your company’s data. At the very least you will need anti-malware protection, anti-virus protection, and good encryption. If you are a big company with greater needs, you will have to look into more advanced data security options.

It might seem expensive to pay for good cyber security, but when human error occurs and all else fails, your security will be the one thing that protects that which is most valuable to your company.
