Two very cool maps: how were their produced?

We received a request to identify the source for the two cool maps below. I did a Google Image Search and found the source for one of them, but for the other one the map seems to have disappeared from the source. Anyone can help find the original? Thank you!

If you have the data, then it's easy to do in Excel with PowerMap.

in fact, the bottom map is in Excel.

Looks like ESRI Maps for Office, which has an Excel plug-in which works with an agency portal, AGOL? ArcScene was the old 3D platform, but they're moving into more of a WebGL like Arcmap Pro that is more 3D....

This article from 2009 explains how earlier spatial data peeps had the same problem having trouble finding the source of those images, but this guy found the company that helped "model" daytime population:

One link to the original Time magazine article from 2007 is now dead... because it was published 10 years ago!

It's great that Joe Lertola had a link of his graphic work on his website, but it doesn't point to where the data came from I think.

The article from the first link I provided does mention that the image was made for the goverment using Landscan.

I think the second image was made using GeoFlow for Excel, which I now realize is named in the image's source link but here is another link to the screen shot on the Bing blog.

Unfortunately, the 3D maps I sent may have been a bit confusing.  I found these images online, and was simply using them to help convey the types-of 3D maps that were included in a semi-recent article that wanted I read.

I seem to recall the article was about Uber,...the visualization plotted Uber's Rider Pickup & Drop-off, by location & separated by color, with the frequency shown in 3D on their map.  It was a beautiful rendering!

If anyone happened to read or recalls seeing the article I'm talking about please drop a post...
